Overview
Session Description: This 1-hour webinar is designed to share best practices for supporting transgender and gender expansive clients in IBH settings. The session will focus on practical implications for mental health clinicians with an emphasis on cultural humility and intersectional theory.
Speaker Bio: Dr. Oak Reed received his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Montana after completing his residency at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee, WI with an emphasis in health psychology. Over the years, he has worked across diverse clinical settings, including outpatient mental health and university-based primary care clinics, community and university-based medical centers, and a variety of clinics within Veterans Health Administration. Oak's primary research interests include analyzing motivations and impacts of anti-transgender prejudices and investigating barriers to care seeking among transgender individuals. Most recently, his dissertation investigated the impact a transgender-affirmative care training had on healthcare providers' competence and confidence in delivering adequate care to gender minority individuals. In addition, he has published both empirical and theoretical articles, book chapters, and book reviews on sexual and gender minority topics. Oak has been invited to lecture on his research findings at universities and health care settings to both national and international audiences in addition to serving on several diversity workgroups. Currently, he is a full-time licensed clinician and Regional Director at Active and Connected Family Therapy where he primarily provides individual therapy for sexual and gender diverse individuals, Veterans, and individuals with complex medical conditions, in addition to facilitating interdisciplinary case consultations and providing psychoeducation to colleagues and community members.
